  • NY hospitals are supplying vitamin C to their coronavirus-infected patients.

On March 24, the NY Post reported that NY hospitals are administering vitamin C to their coronavirus-infected patients. Dr. Andrew G. Weber, a pulmonologist at Northwell Health on Long Island, said his intensive care patients with the virus, immediately hospitalized, receive 1,500 milligrams of intravenous vitamin C. You are getting this dose three or four times a day. This treatment, Dr. Weber said, is based on the experience they had in Shanghai, China. It is reported that 23 hospitals, including Lenox Hill of upper Manhattan's East Side, are using vitamin C as well. In hospitals, patients infected with the virus are being given a cocktail of vitamin C, antimalarial medicine (hydroxychloroquine), the antibiotic azithromycin, and anticoagulants, Dr. Weber added. It has been observed that vitamin C has dramatically lowered the sepsis suffered by patients. Sepsis is the inflammatory response that occurs in the body as a reaction to infection. Dr. Weber said, "It makes all the sense in the world to use and maintain those levels of vitamin C in patients. » What is vitamin C? What is it for? Vitamin C is a water-soluble nutrient. It is an antioxidant that helps protect cells against damage caused by free radicals. Free radicals are compounds that are formed when the body converts the food we consume into energy. People are also exposed to free radicals present in the environment from cigarette smoke, air pollution, and ultraviolet solar radiation. In addition, the body needs vitamin C to produce collagen. Vitamin C also improves the absorption of iron present in plant foods and contributes to the proper functioning of the immune system to protect the body against disease. What foods are a source of vitamin C? Fruits and vegetables are the best sources of vitamin C. Below is a list of some fruits and vegetables and the amount of vitamin C contained in 1/2 cup of that food. Fruits: · Citrus fruits such as lemons, oranges, and red blood, 200 mg of vitamin C in 1/2 cup · Guava, 228 mg of vitamin C in 1/2 cup · Melon, 18 mg vitamin C in 1/2 cup · Kiwi, 100 mg vitamin C in 1/2 cup · Mango, 44 mg vitamin C in 1/2 cup · Papaya, 60 mg of vitamin C in 1/2 cup · Pineapple, 48 grams of vitamin C in 1/2 cup · Strawberries, raspberries, blackberries and blueberries, 70 mg vitamin C in 1/2 cup · Watermelon, 8 grams of vitamin C in 1/2 cup · Grapes, 90 mg vitamin C in 1/2 cup Vegetables: · Parsley, 133 mg vitamin C in 1/2 cup · Basil, 61 mg of vitamin C in 1/2 cup · Broccoli, 110 mg vitamin C in 1/2 cup · Cauliflower, 47 mg vitamin C in 1/2 cup · Brussels and cabbages, 85 mg vitamin C in 1/2 cup · Fennel bulb, 93 mg vitamin C in 1/2 cup · Red pimento 139 mg vitamin C in 1/2 cup The vitamin C content of a food may decrease when cooked or stored for a long time. Fortunately, many of the best sources of vitamin C, such as fruits and vegetables, are eaten raw.

  • What is the benefit of fiber?

Fiber or bagasse is the part of plant-based foods that do not break down during digestion. The fiber reaches the large intestine with little modification, and that's when it does its job: make evacuation easier. Once in the large intestine, the fiber is metabolized by the healthy bacteria present in the colon. There are two categories of fiber: Soluble fiber dissolves in water and is found in oats, peas, beans, barley, and many fruits. Insoluble fiber does not dissolve in water and is found in whole grain products, bran, nuts, and many vegetables. All plant foods contain both types of fiber, some more of one type than the other. The two types of fiber  that help the digestive system function well: SOLUBRE Pre-biotic, these are soluble fibers that allow the growth of healthy microflora Soluble fiber also promotes healthy microflora growth INSOLUBLE Insoluble fiber from grains and vegetables helps promote regular evacuation Resistant starch, a type of insoluble fiber, is slowly metabolized by bacteria in the large intestine. This type of starch produces short-chain fatty acids that give anergia to colon cells Fiber has no calories or vitamins, but it provides a lot of health benefits. Why consume fiber in the daily diet? Most people need more than 32 grams of fiber a day, and we don't consume it Studies have found that people who eat more fiber tend to develop fewer digestive and cardiovascular diseases Fiber naturally suppresses appetite because when the intestine metabolizes it, the brain receives the signal to stop eating If gut health is bad, it is recommended to eat fermented foods because that fermentation makes the concentration of probiotics larger, thus helping to improve digestion Here I share the fiber content in some foods (to add up throughout the day): 1/2 cup cooked beans 8 grams 1 pear 4 grams 1 apple 3 grams 1 banana 3 grams 1/2 cup broccoli 3 grams 1 ounce of almonds 3 grams 1 cup cooked oatmeal 5 grams Shaklee Fiber Plan 4 gramos

  • 3 strategies to eat healthy and other tips

    1. Know how to distinguish between what it is to eat and to nourish yourself. Eating doesn't necessarily mean good nutrition. Good nutrition is acquired by eating fresh food and minimizing or eliminating processed foods, especially fast or junk food, because it contains little or no nutritional value in addition to many empty calories. 2. Eat fresh food. Fresh food is all that nature offers us: fruits, vegetables, or herbal sprouts (such as alfalfa), and seeds or grains. Fresh food is beneficial because the body is in an alkaline state. 3. Do the shopping in the supermarket, walking mainly on the periphery and do not go hungry. In supermarkets, vegetables, fruits, seeds, meats, dairy products, and whole grains are usually on the periphery. Avoid going downtown or isolating, which is where processed foods and junk food are. Notice that if you go to the supermarket hungry, you buy more processed and unhealthy foods. What is processed food? It is food that has undergone a change before being consumed. The processing can be as simple as freezing or drying or as complex as the formulation of frozen or dried foods and combine ingredients such as sweeteners, spices, oils, flavorings, colorants, and preservatives. Processed foods can be: Frozen or canned fruits and vegetables Packaged foods such as cereals, beverages, or baby foods in jars Foods with health and nutritional claims on labels such as: "low in fat," "may reduce the risk of heart disease," or "high in calcium"— Foods fortified with nutrients such as fiber,  vitamin D  and C, and omega-3 fatty acids Prepared foods in quick-service and haute cuisine restaurants, cafeteria, sports stadiums, cafeterias, and other places. What are calories? A calorie is the unit of measurement of the energy that is present in a food. The body needs calories to have power and to be able to fulfill metabolic functions and daily activities. When we consume many calories and do not spend them, our body converts them into fat, accumulating around organs and muscles. What are empty calories? Calories are present in foods that provide very little or no nutrients, such as soft drinks, sweets, flours, fast foods with refined sugars and alcohol.
