- 5 Facts of Muscadine Grape
When most people think of grapes, they imagine the common varieties like Cabernet, Merlot, or Chardonnay. However, another grape that is not only indigenous to America but also packed with extraordinary health benefits is the Muscadine grape. Let’s delve into the fascinating history, unique properties, and incredible health benefits of this superpower fruit. 1. The Muscadine Grape is Indigenous to the US Most wines we enjoy today come from Vitis vinifera grapes native to the Mediterranean. However, when the Spanish and French explorers arrived in what is now the US, they encountered a different grapevine species, Vitis rotundifolia, known as Muscadine. This grapevine was cultivated for wine production as early as the mid-1500s in Florida, making the Sunshine State the birthplace of American wine production. Muscadine grapes, with their thick skins and large seeds, were unlike the grapes explorers were used to. Their distinct taste required adding sugar to make them palatable, a tradition that has contributed to their reputation as a sweet wine grape. However, skilled winemakers today craft balanced Muscadine wines that honor their rich history and unique flavor. 2. The Polyphenol Powerhouse Muscadine grapes have the highest polyphenol content of any grape, making them a nutritional powerhouse. These polyphenols, including tannins, provide the wine’s structure and body and are known for their antioxidant properties. Polyphenols help support heart health and act as antioxidants, neutralizing harmful molecules that can damage cells. The thick skins and seeds of Muscadine grapes are especially rich in these beneficial compounds, making them stand out among other grape varieties. This high polyphenol content is one reason why Muscadine grapes are celebrated for their health benefits. 3. Natural Resistance to Pests and Diseases One of the remarkable features of Muscadine grapes is their natural resistance to pests and diseases. Unlike Vitis vinifera grapes, which are vulnerable to the devastating effects of the phylloxera insect, Muscadine grapes produce a sticky residue that protects them from most environmental microbes and acts as a natural pest repellent. This resilience has made Muscadine rootstock valuable for growing traditional grape varieties. 4. Thriving in Hot, Humid Climates Muscadine grapes are uniquely suited to thrive in hot, humid climates where other grapes cannot. Found throughout the Southern United States, Muscadine grapes can adapt to varying conditions, from the cooler climates of Delaware to the dry regions of Texas. This adaptability makes Muscadine a versatile and resilient crop. 5. Nutritional and Health Benefits Muscadine grapes are rich in ellagic acid and ellagitannins, compounds with significant antioxidant power. These antioxidants help protect and repair DNA, supporting healthy aging at the cellular level. By neutralizing free radicals and reducing oxidative stress, Muscadine grapes contribute to overall cellular health. Embrace the Benefits of Muscadine In addition to their historical significance and unique growing conditions, Muscadine grapes offer numerous health benefits that make them a superpower fruit. Their high polyphenol content, natural pest resistance, and adaptability to different climates make them an excellent choice for health-conscious individuals and winemakers alike. - Bloating: Your Three-Step Solution
Experiencing bloating occasionally is common, but excessive bloating could indicate an underlying digestive imbalance. Fortunately, there are natural ways to reduce bloating and restore digestive harmony. In this blog, we will explore the causes of bloating and provide a three-step solution to help you combat it effectively. Let's dive in! #1 Avoid Giving Fuel to Gut Flora: To minimize bloating, it's essential to be mindful of your diet and make conscious choices. Here are some tips: a. Identify Problematic Foods: Certain foods like milk, beans, and high-fiber foods can be challenging to digest for some individuals. If you notice bloating after consuming specific foods, consider avoiding or limiting them in your diet. b. Say No to Simple Sugars: Consuming excessive amounts of simple sugars, found in soda and sugary treats, can overwhelm your body's ability to digest them. This can contribute to gas production and bloating. Opt for healthier alternatives whenever possible. c. Be Mindful of Cruciferous Vegetables: Foods like beans, broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower, and onions can produce gas during digestion. While they offer numerous health benefits, moderating their consumption may help reduce bloating. #2 Optimize Your Digestion: Improving digestion plays a crucial role in preventing bloating. Here's what you can do: a. Supplement with Digestive Enzymes: As we age, our natural digestive capacity may decline. Supplementing with digestive enzymes, such as those found in EZ-Gest®, can aid in the complete digestion of foods. This reduces the amount of undigested food available for gut flora, ultimately minimizing bloating. b. Practice Mindful Eating: Slow down while eating and choose whole foods whenever possible. Eating slowly allows your digestive system to work more efficiently, aiding in better digestion and reducing the chances of bloating. #3 Optimize Your Gut Flora: Maintaining a healthy gut flora is crucial for proper digestion and minimizing bloating. Follow these recommendations: a. Incorporate Probiotic Foods: Probiotic-rich foods like kimchi, sauerkraut, yogurt, kefir, and kombucha help establish a healthy balance of bacteria in your digestive tract. Despite their gas-producing potential, the beneficial bacteria in probiotics produce less irritating gas. Alternatively, you can consider using a probiotic supplement like Optiflora® DI to support digestive and immune health. b. Embrace Prebiotic Foods: Prebiotics, found in foods like garlic, onions, asparagus, leeks, bananas, barley, and oats, serve as nourishment for the good bacteria in your gut flora. By incorporating prebiotic-rich foods or supplements like Optiflora® Prebiotic Complex, you can promote the growth and multiplication of friendly bacteria, supporting a healthy gut. Additional Considerations: Manage Stress and Prioritize Sleep: Stress, lack of sleep, and hormonal changes can disrupt digestion. Practicing stress management techniques and ensuring adequate sleep can contribute to better digestion and reduced bloating. Watch out for Artificial Sweeteners: Some artificial sweeteners are known to cause gas and bloating. Be mindful of their consumption and opt for natural sweeteners when possible. Exercise Regularly: Regular exercise promotes healthy digestion and reduces bloating. Incorporate physical activity into your routine to support overall digestive health. By implementing these natural strategies, you can effectively reduce bloating and support a healthy digestive system. Remember, if bloating persists despite these measures, it's essential to seek medical advice as it may be a sign of an underlying health condition. Prioritize your digestive health and overall well-being by taking care of your gut flora and making conscious choices for a bloating-free future. __________ *These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. - 8 reasons to start the day with a healthy and balanced breakfast
Meaning of the word breakfast Breakfast is a compound word de-fasting. "Des" means "to get out of," and "fast" means "empty of food." Breakfast: the most important mealtime of your day Breakfast is the most important mealtime because it has probably been 8 to 12 hours in which you have not received any food. When you wake up, your blood glucose levels are low, and your metabolism needs a good load of energy to start the day's work. Not having breakfast is a mistake because later you will walk hungry and itching unchecked and eating anything. Benefits of breakfast Your metabolism will be more active, and you will burn calories You will start the day with more energy You will have more focus, concentration, and good memory It will help keep bad cholesterol (LDL) low You'll avoid the chance of developing diabetes You're going to help your heart stay healthy You will maintain a healthy weight You will be acquiring a healthy habit that will motivate you to maintain a healthy lifestyle Quick and nutritious breakfast A quick and nutritious breakfast could be a smoothie. Make sure your smoothie contains protein, fruit, vegetables, seeds, spices, etc. The type of protein I recommend is Shaklee Life Shake because it tastes great and is a complete meal with 20g of protein, 6g of fiber, and 24 essential vitamins and minerals. Life Shake will give you energy and all the essential nutrients to support your overall health. You will feel satisfied, you will not feel like biting and it will help you maintain a healthy weight.
- Sun Protection with SPF 30 for Body
Using SPF (Sun Protection Factor) daily is essential for protecting your skin from the sun's harmful UV rays. Here are some reasons why SPF is important for your skin: Skin protection: The sun's UVB rays can cause sunburns and damage your skin. Prolonged exposure to these rays can lead to more severe skin damager. Using a sunscreen or moisturizer with SPF helps block a significant portion of UVB rays. Dermatologists recommend using a product with at least SPF 30, which blocks 97 percent of UVB rays. Anti-aging benefits: The sun's UVA rays can penetrate deeper into your skin and contribute to premature aging. Wrinkles, fine lines, and age spots are often caused by long-term sun exposure. By using a broad spectrum SPF product, you can protect your skin from both UVA and UVB rays, helping to prevent signs of aging and maintaining a more youthful appearance. Healthy-looking skin: Consistent use of SPF can help your skin maintain a smooth and healthy appearance. When you use a moisturizer with broad spectrum SPF, you not only protect your skin from sun damage but also nourish it. This can contribute to a healthier and more glowing complexion. In addition to using SPF, here are some other tips to stay safe in the sun: Wear protective clothing: Opt for light-colored, natural fiber clothing that allows your skin to breathe. Wearing a wide-brimmed hat provides extra protection for your face and shields your hair from the sun. Don't forget to wear sunglasses that block UV rays to protect your eyes. Limit sun exposure: Try to avoid direct sun exposure, especially between 12 p.m. and 4 p.m. when the UV light is the strongest. Seek shade or use umbrellas and canopies to create shade when spending time outdoors. Reapply sunscreen: Apply sunscreen or moisturizer with SPF every two hours, or more frequently if you've been sweating or swimming. Even if the product claims to be waterproof, it's important to reapply to ensure continuous protection. Don't forget vulnerable areas: Apply SPF products to all exposed parts of your body, including areas like your ears, the sides of your neck, and the top of your feet. These areas are often overlooked but are still susceptible to sun damage. Stay hydrated: Drink plenty of water to stay hydrated, especially in hot weather. The heat from the sun can cause increased perspiration, leading to water loss in your body. Carry a water bottle with you and aim to drink at least 8–10 glasses of water every day. By following these tips and incorporating SPF 30 for Body into your daily skincare routine, you can enjoy the summer while keeping your skin safe and healthy. Protect your skin every day: Incorporate SPF 30 for Body into your daily skincare routine to provide broad-spectrum protection for your body. Whether it's a sunny day or not, the sun's harmful UV rays can damage your skin. Using SPF30 for Body helps shield your skin from both UVA and UVB rays, reducing the risk of sunburns, premature aging. Suitable for all skin types: This SPF 30 for Body sunscreen is designed to be gentle on the skin, making it suitable for all skin types, including the most sensitive skin. Its oil-free and non-sticky formula ensures a smooth and quick absorption, without leaving any residue. It's a hassle-free way to protect your skin without causing irritation or discomfort. Take advantage of the added benefits: Not only does this sunscreen provide broad-spectrum protection, but it also contains a triple-patented Vital-Repair+® Complex with antioxidant vitamins and botanicals. This complex helps nourish and soothe your skin, providing additional defense against premature skin aging. By using this SPF 30 for Body sunscreen, you're not only protecting your skin from the sun, but also nourishing it and maintaining its health and vitality. Remember to apply the sunscreen at least 15 minutes prior to sun exposure, reapply every two hours or after swimming or sweating for 80 minutes, and immediately after towel drying. If you have children under six months, consult with a doctor for appropriate sun protection recommendations. Take action today and prioritize your skin's health and protection by incorporating SPF 30 for Body into your daily routine. ________________ *These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. - Overweight, stress and some tips
We know that we will gain weight, if we consume more calories than what we burn. When we want to maintain a healthy weight we must eat foods with high nutritional level and low calories. This is the ABCs of a weight reduction and maintenance plan. But, sometimes, despite eating a good diet, stress does not allow us to lose weight. Stress is the body's response to the pressures or challenges we face daily. When we are under stress a mixture of hormonal and psychological factors is generated and this can contribute to weight gain. When we are in a stressful situation our body generates a hormone called cortisol which is also known as the "stress hormone." In addition to cortisol, other hormones such as epinephrine and norepinephrine are part of the "fight or flight" response to stressful situations. But, once the stressful situation passes, epinephrine and norepinephrine levels return to normal while cortisol levels may remain elevated longer. (What's more, when stress levels are chronic, cortisol levels can remain consistently elevated.) Cortisol is necessary for energy loading and stimulating fat metabolism. It also helps in quickly getting energy from carbohydrates by stimulating the release of insulin and maintaining blood sugar levels. The result of this whole process is increased appetite. Therefore, when we are under chronic stress or poorly managed, elevated cortisol levels stimulate appetite and lead us to gain weight or have difficulty losing unwanted pounds. There are two main types of stress:(1) Acute stress. This is short-term stress that goes away quickly. You can feel it when you press the brakes, fight with your partner or ski on a slope. This helps you control dangerous situations. It also happens when you do something new or exciting. All people feel acute stress at one time or another. Chronic stress. This is stress that lasts for an extended period of time. One can have chronic stress with money problems, an unhappy marriage, or challenges at work. Any type of stress that continues for weeks or months is chronic stress. One can get so used to chronic stress that one doesn't realize it's a problem. If you don't find ways to manage stress, it could cause health problems. Tips to followed when you want to lose weight Eat a diet of healthy foods like fresh fruits and vegetables, low-fat foods, lean protein, nuts, and whole grains. Control calories. If you weigh 150 pounds to lose weight you need to consume 1,200 calories. If you weigh 151-200 pounds to lose weight you need to consume 1,500 calories If you weigh 201-250 pounds and to lose weight you need to consume 1,800 calories If you weigh +251 pounds to lose weight you need to consume 2,100 calories Stay physically active with activities such as walking, running, playing a sport, zumba, or running Manage stress with a good diet, exercising, having fun, rest and use nutritional or herbal supplements that help manage stress such as Stress Relief Complex, this formula contains: L-Theanine, this is a well-known amino acid because it helps reduce stress and feel more relaxed (2) Ashwagandha is an adaptogen herb that studies have shown to help reduce stress (3) Beta Sitosterol is a plant sterol that has been shown to help reduce the increase in cortisol (4) L-Tyrosine is an amino acid used by the body to create the neurotransmitter norepinephrine and has been shown to prevent a decline in cognitive function in response to physical stress (5). ____________________________ (1) https://medlineplus.gov/spanish/ency/article/003211.htm (2) Kimura K, Ozeki M, Juneja LR, Ohira H. - Toxics in Cosmetics?
Cosmetics are makeup, creams, deodorants, toothpaste, soaps, hair products, perfumes and more. We use cosmetics for hygiene and to maintain and enhance our beauty. But are there toxic ingredients in your cosmetics? In 1938, Congress passed the U.S. Food, Drug, and Cosmetics Act. Since then, the Federal Government has worked with the industry to make cosmetics harmless and together they have made many changes to protect consumers. To ensure that you are using nontoxic cosmetics it is important that you pay attention to the labels of your products. Under the law, the label must give a description of the product, list of ingredients, amount of product it contains, and the name of the company that manufactures or sells them. The law does not require cosmetics to have an expiration date, but they are indicative of the "freshness" of the product. Toxic ingredients in cosmetics The cosmetics industry is not regulated, so it is important that you pay attention to the ingredients contained in your cosmetics. The ingredients in cosmetics are just as important as skincare itself. That's why it's important to read the labels of your cosmetics and identify toxic ingredients. Did you know that more than 2,500 toxic ingredients are estimated in the cosmetics industry? In the United States, only 11 of these toxins are currently banned. Take some time to read the list of toxics in this post. I constantly check this list to ensure that my cosmetics do not contain them because I know that these toxic ingredients can be a significant problem that affects my health. Toxic ingredients: Parabens Sodium/ammonium lauryl sulfate Phthalates Propylene glycol BHT BHA Mercury Hydroquinone Mineral oil Petroleum jelly Synthetic Colors Synthetic Fragrance Benzalkonium Chloride Benzophenone Cyclomethicone Aluminium lacquers Lanolin Waxes derived from Quaternium-15 petroleum Metilisotiazolinona Butoxietanol Tar 1,4 dioxane (PEG derivatives) EDTA Etanolamidas (MEA/DEA/TEA) Conservantes de formaldehído Triclosán Mycrospheres (microplastics) Paraaminobenzoic acid (PABA) Avobenzono Cinoxato Dioxibenzona Ecamsule Ensulizol (phenylbenzymazole acid) Resorcinol Perfluorinated compounds Styrene Drank galato Nitro and polycyclic musks Keeping an eye out for them and avoiding these toxic ingredients is important because they can significantly cause problems to your health. There are abundant studies on these toxic ingredients such as the multiple studies presented in the publication Environment California, 2004 that indicate the potential danger to human health and the environment.
- GERMS, OUT!
What are germs? Germs are microorganisms that can only be seen through a microscope and are found everywhere. Germs are viruses, bacteria, fungi, and parasites and spread throughair, soil, water, skin, and body. Many germs live in our bodies without causing us any harm but there are others that can make us sick with an infection. Germs spread: Person-to-person when we touch, kiss, or share food and or utensils. Through the air when a person coughs or sneezes near us. When we go to the bathroom and touch stool, when we change diapers, and then we touch our eyes, nose, or mouth. By touching objects and surfaces that have germs, and then touching our eyes, nose, or mouth. Through animals or insect bites. When we are gardening or touch soil that is contaminated. How to protect us from germs? By covering our mouth and nose with a tissue or using the inside of our elbow when coughing or sneezing. Washing our hands thoroughly and frequently, using plenty of soap and water. (TIP: We should scrub our hands for a minute). We should also wash our hands before, during, after preparing food and before eating. Washing our hands is important when we are caring for a sick person with colds, vomiting and or diarrhea or treating a wound. We should also wash our hands when we use the toilet, change diapers, sneeze, as well as, after feeding or playing with a pet and after throwing away the garbage. If soap and water are not available, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer that contains at least 60% alcohol. Stay at home if we are sick. Avoid close contact with sick people. - What is the keto diet?
When you eat carbohydrates such as grains, legumes and fruits, your body begins to process glucose. In the traditional diet, glucose is the energy source of your metabolism. Very different is the keto diet because the goal (on this diet) is for your body to use a different energy: ketones.. Ketones is a type of energy that the liver produces from stored fat. Burning that fat looks great for you to lose weight. But, to get the liver to produce ketones, you need to suppress carbohydrates to less than 20-50 grams a day. (You should keep in mind that it will take you a couple of days on the keto diet for you to achieve a state of ketosis in your body.) What and how do you eat with the keto diet? As the keto diet requires a high fat content, it should be consumed at all meals. On a 2,000-calorie diet, you'd need to eat: 165 grams of fat 75 grams of protein 40 grams of carbohydrates You must keep in mind that the average calories and the average fat, protein and carbohydrate percentages depend on your needs, and it is advisable to discuss it with your doctor. Saturated fats such as palm oil and coconut oil are recommended in the keto diet, but also fats such as almonds, walnuts, seeds, avocado, tofu, and olive oil can be consumed. Proteins such as beef, pork, bacon, and fish are staple foods of the diet. What about fruits and vegetables in the keto diet? All fruits are rich in carbohydrates, but in the keto diet you can consume berries such as strawberries, raspberries, and blackberries (in small portions). Vegetables are also rich in carbohydrates so in the keto diet consumption is restricted to greens such as spinach, kale, cauliflower, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, asparagus, sweet chilies, onions, garlic, mushrooms, cucumber, celery, and summer pumpkins. Risks attributed to the keto diet. * High consumption of foods with saturated fats. Saturated fats increase LDL ("bad" cholesterol) and this fat that is associated with heart disease. Nutritional deficiencies because not eating a greater variety of fruits, vegetables and grains runs the risk of deficiencies of micronutrients such as selenium, magnesium, phosphorus and vitamins B and C. The liver must metabolize more fat which can aggravate existing conditions in the liver. The kidneys help in the processing of protein and the keto diet is a protein-laden diet (the average daily protein intake for women is calculated at 46 grams and for men 56 grams). Constipation is a condition more prone to low consumption of foods rich in fiber such as grains, legumes, and fruits. * The information expressed in this blog is based on comments given by Kathy McManus, MS, RD, LDN, Director of the Department of Nutritionand Director of the Brigham Diet Internship and The Women's Hospital.
